On another excursion through the land, we headed out to the Kroller-Muller museum, in the heart of the Netherlands. There, we found the most fantastic collection of Van Gogh's work, to me even more impressive than the Van Gogh museum in Amsterdam...and not too crowded either. At this museum, I really saw Van Gogh's paintings for the first time, and it made an extraordinary impression on me.
The museum stands on the ground of a great national park, De Hoge Veluwe, which is also home to a class-trip style underground science museum. Here is an educational display of a trio of birds picking the guts out of a fallen dear.
After we'd had our fill of Van Gogh and the food chain, we headed out to the easternmost border of the Netherlands, a newer, and not nearly so charming (asphalt streets..) city, Enschede. Of course, we were visiting Wim Van Bergen and his sweet wife, Ineke (who do have a charming home there) . We had a few joints and talked, while watching a trashy American TV show on the high resolution, wide screen, commercial free Dutch TV.
And of course, we had a real nice visit with Arno (Anneke's first husband) and his wife, Gila, neighbors of the former queen, Wilhelmina.
