About a hundred years ago, there was this castle, "Haarzuilens" was a likely pile of rubble ready for demolition. But then came a fellow with an awful lot of money, and an unbelievable ambition to renovate and live in the place...and so he did, uprooted trees, farms, even bought houses to demolish them so he could move his plantings (mature trees) through the streets. It's pretty nice now, and part of it is open to the public part of the time. His descendents still live there off visiting season. We took a nice walking tour of the castle (entirely in Dutch) and Anneke had a pleasant tete-a-tete with one of the fierce lions who stands guard.
