Finally, our big pan-European rail trip brought us back to Holland. It was a great relief to settle in a little bit, and thanks to these very cool friends of Anneke, who were going out of town for a few weeks, Anneke and I got to stay in their nice 3-storey home right in Utrecht. That's them, Frans and Mieke up top.
And here are some sights of Utrecht: window of a cheese shop --
Kaaskamer means "cheese room". It happened that there was a traveling carnival (Kermis) in town the first couple of weeks we were there, just a few blocks away. The fellows on the right are frying up a very popular Dutch treat, poffertjes. They're little dollar-size pancakes, cooked up on this special grill with shallow cups carved into it.
And, right, of course, you see a display of some typical Dutch folk dance. Sorry, no clogs in this one.
I had a great time, hitting the streets of Utrecht on my own, checking out the chess café, the local night clubs and eating joints. And speaking of joints, there I am standing in the middle of Utrecht with a great big spleef hanging out of my mouth. My first joint in Holland, and my first
legal marijuana experience ever. And it was good stuff, man.
